Fluorescently labeled small heterocyclic molecules (SHMs) exhibit exceptional photostability in solution and are not easily photobleached. We report the design, preparation, and characterization of water-soluble, small SHM-conjugated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with defined core size, morphology, and colloidal stability. Chemical conjugation of cationic, fluorescently labeled pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDA) molecules onto preformed, neutral SHM-capped AuNPs afforded thiol-conjugated, water-soluble, fluorescent nanoparticles with short-term colloidal stability and enhanced fluorescence intensity. Conformal coating of the AuNPs was achieved by reducing the number of molecules bound to the particle surfaces and was confirmed by zeta potential and photon correlation spectroscopy measurements. The PDA-conjugated nanoparticles were shown to be useful for the labeling and subsequent separation of individual protein molecules and cells. The size-dependent fluorescence emission intensity and lifetime of the AuNP-SHMs suggest that the nanoparticle surface roughness or the quantum size effect are the dominant factors contributing to the enhanced fluorescence intensity. The purpose of this study was to determine if the gluteal vibration therapy (GVV) would increase pressure pain threshold. Subjects in a pilot study were included if they had a history of mechanical pain and chronic low back pain and a negative history for serious disease or malignancy.
